fao & bot launch cultural calendar for portland

New comprehensive cultural calendar provides critical resource for Portland Metro area [PDF]

PORTLAND, Ore. (October 28, 2008) --

On November 11, 2008 Film Action Oregon (FAO) and Box Office Tickets, Inc. (BOT) will unveil the new, innovative PDX Cultural Calendar for the Portland Metro area. The launch will occur at 4:00pm at the Hollywood Theatre at NE 41st Avenue and Sandy Boulevard, and will include case studies from organizations that will utilize the Cultural Calendar for their own websites. The website address for the Calendar will be www.pdxcc.net

"As Arts and Culture Commissioner we at the city are excited about this project," said Mayor-elect Sam Adams. "This innovative and grass-roots cultural calendar will help facilitate better communication and collaboration between artists and creatives--as well as being a one-stop-shopping experience for Portland's Arts and Culture audiences."

The Cultural Calendar is designed to be a user-friendly online database of cultural events that can be searched by date, genre, keyword and neighborhood. The Calendar database can be utilized to automatically update other websites as well. Cultural organizations and artists will benefit from having one central location to post their events.

"For years, Portland’s cultural organizations have sought to develop a comprehensive online calendar where all cultural events (performances, concerts, gallery shows, fundraisers, etc.) could be listed," said Ellen Bergstone Beer, executive director, Film Action Oregon. "When FAO and BOT launched the PDX Ticket Network in March 2008 we laid the groundwork for the technology for the PDX Cultural Calendar and today are proud to support ticketing for 40 local organizations. The new Cultural Calendar will only expand our support of all cultural events in Portland."

An open API makes it possible for information to be accessed from the Cultural Calendar's database and utilized by other websites. The information can be filtered and is automatically updated whenever a change is made in the database. The layout of the calendar data can be customized to match the style and format of any website.
